Snow Angels

Nate is too young still to play in the snow, but Mia is just getting there. With a good 8" freshly dumped on us last night, and another 8" scheduled for tomorrow morning, it's time to show her the fun to be had living in New England.

After the camera batteries died, she made another 3 snow angels, and reluctantly came back inside despite the blue fingers, only upon the promise of hot chocolate.

Getting our game faces on

The holidays are taking on a new significance this year, now that Mia is old enough to 'get it'. Thinking back, it always seemed that these things just happened, you wake up one morning and there's a halloween parade outside your front door. Come home one day and the hallway smells of spruce and your roommate has heated up some apple cider. I'm getting this overpowering sense though that it's our responsibility to make these things happen, and not let local furniture commercials introduce her to what Christmas music is supposed to be about.

So we put the tree up early, had friends over for making Christmas cookies, and am trying to get creative with all these boxes that have been coming in the mail and empty cardboard tubes from the wrapping paper.

Time to get that gate up again

It's a bit after the fact, as he's been covering ground for the last week or two, but it's only recently that Nate is getting comfortable deciding where he wants to go and managing to get there. Before now it's been suspenseful watching him fixate on something to chew on, just out of reach, only to find his only gear was reverse. Note the confidence, and sense of purpose, if not the color commentary from his sister.

(Try to ignore the matching red onesy and red pants, and focus more on the yet-to-be-decorated Christmas tree in the corner.)

Thought for the day

Today, being the birthday of Rainer Maria Rilke, it seems appropriate to quote the man on what is clearly his take on parenthood.

"The Purpose of life is to be defeated by greater and greater things"

Now go out and read something good today.

A day in the life

If pictures be worth a thousand words, may I present the story of our family lately:

It's getting cold in Boston these days

The kids have been getting along great together

..although Nate's teeth are starting to come in, keeping him up all hours at night.

..and Mia does her best to keep us on our toes until she crashes

Walter does what he can to find his safe place

Thanksgiving Postscript

One of the joys of having young kids is we get to plead extenuating circumstances when it comes to travel related holidays. Fair or not, we were able to convince the grandparents to come to Boston this year rather than put the kids and the dog in the car to New York. The hours they've collectedly logged stuck on the pike so we didn't have to, was greatly appreciated.

Besides, call me a control freak, but I like to be the cook if given the chance.

Mia, as is her way, had the smallest of tastes, and continues in her roll as my harshest critic. Nate had a bite of some mashed turkey with a dijon-shallot dressing.

All in all, a good time was had by all.
